American Airlines announces 10 new routes from Austin

American Airlines has announced its expansion plans from Austin in Texas.

Doubling down on Austin

Austin is getting a lot of love from various different airlines and American Airlines is no exception. The carrier is doubling down on Austin with 10 new routes out of which 7 are yaar-round and 3 are seasonal routes.

Coupled with codeshares on partners – JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, and British Airways – American will offer its customers access to 26 destinations out of Austin this summer.

From Austin, the airline will be adding year round services to:

• Nashville International Airport with daily service from 6th May, increasing to twice-daily from 2nd July using Embraer E175s
• Las Vegas McCarran International Airport with daily service from 6th May, increasing daily from 3rd June using Boeing B737-800s
• Orlando International Airport with daily service from 6th May using a Boeing B737-800
• New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport with daily service from 6th May using a Boeing B737-800
• Tampa International Airport with daily service from 3rd June using a Airbus A319
• Washington Dulles International Airport with twice-daily service from 17th August using Airbus A319s
• Raleigh-Durham International Airport with daily service from 2nd July, increasing to twice-daily service from 17th August using Embraer E175s

and seasonal services to 3 cities on Saturdays only that are:

• Aspen/Pitkin County Airport from 5th June to 4th September using a Mitsubishi CRJ700
• Los Cabos International Airport from 5th June to 14th August on a seasonal extension using Airbus A319s
• Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport from 5th June to 14th August using Embraer E175s

Brian Znotins, Vice President of Network Planning, American Airlines, stated the following on the new routes out of Austin:

American is eager to expand in Austin alongside the exponential growth of the region, and we’ll be the easiest airline to do business with as we continue to grow. Customers have been asking for more service to Austin, and today we’re answering the call. These routes not only provide opportunities for companies to get back to business and for leisure travelers to enjoy the excitement of Austin, but also connect Central Texans with new leisure destinations they desire.

American’s expansion out of Austin

American Airlines already serves nine destinations out of Austin. These are:

• Boston Logan International Airport
• Charlotte Douglas International Airport
• Chicago O’Hare International Airport
• Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport
• Los Angeles International Airport
• Miami International Airport
• New York John F. Kennedy International Airport
• Philadelphia International Airport
• Phoenix–Sky Harbor International Airport

In addition to AA’s new, returning and existing Austin flights, the carrier is working closely with its two United States-based partners, Alaska and JetBlue on codeshare routes.

American will add its AA code to four Alaska Airlines routes beginning 6th May: Austin to San Diego, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.

American Airlines already has an Admirals Club in Austin, so the airline views this as an important node in its network. The Austin expansion has even caught the eye of major corporate customers. Rita Visser, Director of Global Travel Sourcing, Oracle, said:

Competition out of Austin

Austin is an important city to Delta, which categorizes the airport as a focus city in its network. However, Delta’s Austin presence is little beyond its connections to its mainline hubs. With American adding a host of new routes out of the airport, the competition will be increasing, but it appears American is on track to win the bulk of travelers to and from Austin.

Southwest Airlines also has many flights out of Austin. The airline, which typically advertises a point-to-point network out of Austin, will compete with American Airlines on some of these routes.

Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines has also announced a new route connecting Austin with Boise in Idaho.
