Qantas to launch flights between Adelaide and Newcastle in March 2022

Qantas has announced that it will launch flights between Adelaide and Newcastle in March 2022.

Starting 28th March 2022, QantasLink, Qantas’ subsidiary, will operate 3-weekly nonstop flights between Adelaide Airport and Newcastle Airport. The flights will run with the following schedule:

  • Adelaide-Newcastle
  • Departure time: 13:25
  • Arrival time: 16:00
  • Flight time: 2 hours and 05 minutes
  • Flight number: QF1948
  • Frequency: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
  • Newcastle-Adelaide
  • Departure time: 16:45
  • Arrival time: 18:25
  • Flight time: 2 hours and 10 minutes
  • Flight number: QF1949
  • Frequency: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

These flights will be operated by Embraer E190s that were introduced to QantasLink’s fleet in May 2021 as part of the airline’s agreement with Alliance Airlines. Qantas says that with the E190’s size, range and economics, the dual-class 94-seat jet has opened up a number of new routes that wouldn’t have been viable with Qantas’ existing fleet.

John Gissing, CEO, QantasLink, said:

We know that many of our customers are flying between Adelaide and Newcastle via Sydney and we’re delighted that we’re able to offer this direct service for the first time. Adelaide and Newcastle are both gateways to some of Australia’s best wine regions and we think there’ll be strong demand on the route.

Premier Steven Marshall welcomed the announcement, saying it would lead to further growth of the South Australian visitor economy. He said:

Newcastle offers a significant opportunity for leisure tourism and also for resources, defence and other corporate travel. Qantas has provided South Australia with a number of new routes after basing the E190 aircraft here, and it’s terrific to continue our strong relationship with such an important partner.

Dr Peter Cock, CEO, Newcastle Airport, said:

The support that our region has shown us during the good times and bad over the last two years has been phenomenal. The Newcastle-Adelaide route is one of the most in-demand and searched for by our customers. We’re incredibly excited that we’re able to deliver another popular service for the region – our sixth new route in 2021. Research shows that our community is more likely to travel for leisure than the rest of the country. This new service offers another chance for them to get back to family, back to business and back to enjoying a long overdue holiday.

Mark Young, Managing Director, Adelaide Airport, said:

Newcastle is one of our largest unserved markets and we’re excited that Qantas has recognised the opportunities that a service between our two cities offers. Newcastle is Australia’s second largest regional city with many similarities to Adelaide, including its defence focus and proximity to the Hunter Valley wine region. It also provides a great alternative to travelling via Sydney for passengers wanting to travel to and from the Central Coast, Hunter and North Coast regions.

The new service will be the only direct connection between Newcastle and Adelaide, saving more than two hours each way compared to flying via Sydney.

Meanwhile, Qantas, on 1st November 2021, operated its first ever international scheduled flight in nearly 600 days from Los Angeles to Sydney.

Absolutely fantastic news ,introducing flights direct from Adelaide to Newcastle, return WELL DONE QUANTAS,a wonderful air passenger service for ALL Australians yah!!! direct at last,so,so,good cheers John SA

Yes absolutely. Presently, if an individual wants to fly between Adelaide and Newcastle, they have to fly via Sydney. But with the help of this new flight, travellers will finally be able to travel nonstop between the two cities. Qantas is doing a wonderful job introducing new nonstop flights as travellers increasing want to travel nonstop and it’s good that the airline is listening to its customers and addressing their needs.

Cheers!!

I have a lot of family in Adelaide and if I want to leave from Newcastle the options have been a stop in Brisbane or Melbourne. (Its always been more expensive flying to Sydney first) Flying direct is amazing, I will see more relatives from Adelaide coming this way to check out the wineries, so much easier to visit 2 or 3 times a year
