Flying soon in India? Check the new cabin baggage rules here

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has amended the rules regarding the cabin baggage allowance.

The new rules now allow passengers to carry only one cabin bag in addition to a designated handbag, both for domestic and international flights. Any additional luggage must be checked in.

If you are flying with Air India in Economy and Premium Economy Class, a single handbag weighing up to 7 kg is allowed, while Business and First Class passengers are allowed a cabin bag weighing up to 10 kg. The bag dimensions must not exceed 40 cm x 20 cm x 55 cm.

If you are flying with IndiGo, the airline permits one cabin bag up to 7 kg and 115 cm in total dimensions, plus a personal item weighing up to 3 kg, such as a purse or laptop bag.

These changes aim to enhance security, reduce congestion at security checks, and improve the boarding process. The new policy also supports managing the growing number of travellers at airports, especially in India.

Passengers who booked flights before May 4, 2024, are exempt from the new weight restrictions, retaining the previous limits of 8 kg for economy, 10 kg for premium economy, and 12 kg for first and business class.

If you are flying with any other airline, it is best to check their guidelines regarding cabin baggage allowance. BCAS says that non-compliance may lead to additional charges or penalties.
