British Airways has announced plans for two new routes from London City Airport for Summer 2021 using Embraer E190 aircrafts.
A year ago, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, London City Airport closed its doors and as a result, the entire BA CityFlyer fleet was grounded. However, with the summer travel returning, British Airways is planning to use these smaller Embraer Jets instead of the bigger ones, as is the case with the London to Frankfurt route, currently only served from London City.
These new services will run initially for the summer season. BA already offers flights to Gibraltar from London Heathrow, and to Jersey from London Gatwick.
London City-Gibraltar
As the flag carrier of British Airways, it is nothing new for them to fly to Gibraltar. Starting 25th June, the airline will be adding a new twice-a-week route to this British Overseas Territory from London City Airport.

The BA CityFlyer Embraer E190
As mentioned, BA CityFlyer will use its Embraer E190s for the flights to Gibraltar and Jersey. The airline currently has 22 of the type, according to Planespotters.net. However, according to it, only 5 are active now, with the remaining parked at Norwich Airport in Norfolk.
British Airways’ CityFlyer’s E190s are able to seat up to 98 passengers, with the aircraft able to accommodate one or two travel classes. As the aircraft has a 2-2 layout, there are no middle seats. Everybody gets an aisle or window seat.
Commenting on the launch, Tom Stoddart, Managing Director, CityFlyer, said:
It’s great to be able to launch these two new services to Gibraltar and Jersey – it’s something customers have been asking us to do for quite a while. Whether it’s for a holiday or visiting friends or relatives who live either end of route when the time is right, customers will benefit from direct flights to and from the extremely conveniently located London City Airport.
Commenting on the news, Hon Vijay Daryanani MP, Minister for Business, Tourism, Transport and the Port of Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar, said:
This is excellent news and continues to show the confidence that the industry has in Gibraltar as a destination. A seasonal link with London City Airport operated by BA CityFlyer brings yet another operator to Gibraltar and opens up a further catchment area from the UK. This service will complement BA’s mainline services from Heathrow and the local business and financial services community will undoubtedly welcome a link to London’s financial district. Our tourism, retail and hospitality industries can also look forward to greeting customers from the City and the east London catchment area.
