Mauritius, also known as the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. The capital and largest city of Mauritius is Port Louis, where most of the population is concentrated. Mauritius is a wondrous place – created as a product of volcanic activity. This sensational island is filled with exotic natural wonders; from the coloured earth at Chamarel, the crater lake at Grand Bassin to the dormant volcano at Trou aux Cerfs and the iconic Le Morne Brabant (which is deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Mauritius is also home to exceptional national parks, gorgeous waterfalls, ample hiking trails (many of which reward hikers with fabulous views) and an extraordinary botanical garden. It also has some fascinating neighbouring islets and is home to a wealth of endemic plants and some very rare birds (like the Dodo)- this is a nature lover’s wonderland. Tourism is a major contributor to the nation’s economy and as a result, many international brands have opened resorts on the island over the years.
