Brian Dranzik, Director, Milwaukee County Airport, said:

It’s just a great feeling being here today to welcome new air service to Milwaukee. When you think about where we were a year ago, it’s hard to imagine that we would be introducing a new airline here at MKE, let alone one that’s expanding so quickly. Spirit Airlines is now up to eight nonstop destinations from MKE, which provides Milwaukee travelers even more connections to where they want to go.

As Fort Lauderdale is one of Spirit’s largest gateway cities, nonstop flights from Milwaukee will offer one-stop connections throughout the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.

David Crowley, Executive, Milwaukee County, said:

Spirit Airlines’ bright yellow planes are now taking off from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. And the fact that Spirit is expanding so quickly is a great reflection of the bright future it signifies for our hometown Airport. Spirit brings affordable fares to popular destinations which will make it easier for our Milwaukee travelers to connect with their friends and family this summer and beyond.

Competition

Southwest Airlines is the dominant carrier in Milwaukee. According to the data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Southwest has a 47.71% market share at the airport. Spirit Airlines will go head-to-head against Southwest Airlines on all the new routes.

Flights to Tampa and Fort Myers will see great competition with United Airlines. This routes were launched under United’s pandemic-ear network strategy to boost flights to outdoor-friendly destinations. United Airlines has not put those flights back in the winter schedule, so those flights may have just been one-off adds during the pandemic with plenty of free aircraft.

Frontier Airlines also services both routes. However, service to Fort Myers on Frontier is seasonal and will only begin from late December.

Additionally, Sun Country Airlines is also launching flights to Fort Myers and Cancun this winter.

All in all, residents of Milwaukee and frequent flyers out of the airport will have plenty of airlines to choose from.

Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines has announced 4 new routes out of Manchester Airport in New England. The carrier has also announced plans to launch flights from Miami with 30 routes.
