Expanding after a long time
GoFirst has announced a major expansion after a long time. The airline has been in the process of converting itself from a low cost carrier into a Ultra low cost carrier since the last few months. The carrier has also changed its name from GoAir to GoFirst Airways with the tagline ‘You Come First’.
Starting today, GoFirst is flying to 3 brand-new destinations: Surat, Amritsar and Dehradun. The airline has also resumed flights to Aizawl. This takes the domestic destinations the airline has launched since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to 5, having launched services to Coimbatore and Mangalore in Summer 2021.
Competition
GoFirst will be a market leader on the Mumbai-Amritsar sector with twice-daily flights. Indigo operates a daily flight between Mumbai and Amritsar while Air India operates 4-weekly flights.
As for the Delhi-Amritsar sector, both GoFirst and Indigo will have thrice-daily flights. Air India and Vistara have twice-daily flights between Delhi and Amritsar while SpiceJet operates a once-daily flight between the two cities.
On the Amritsar-Srinagar sector, GoFirst will compete directly with Indigo, which operates a daily flight. GoFirst will thus break Indigo’s monopoly on the route.
Amritsar is a big market
Amritsar is a large city and economic hub of Punjab. The city has high tourism potential as tourists from all over the world visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The Golden Temple is the holiest gurudwara (religious complex) of the Sikh religion.
As for GoFirst, it remains to be seen if it can take on Indigo, Air India and Vistara on the Delhi-Amritsar market, given that the three of them are sort of ‘established’ players in the market. On each of the three sectors that the airline is starting to Amritsar, GoFirst will compete with Indigo and competing with Indigo is no small task – something which SpiceJet has not successfully managed to do in some markets.
Meanwhile, GoFirst is today launching flights from Surat to Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru.
