SWISS International Airlines – a part of Lufthansa Group – has announced that it will introduce Airbus A350-900s to its fleet. The airline will start taking delivery of these aircraft 2025 onwards.
Airbus A350s coming to SWISS!
SWISS will be taking delivery of 5 Airbus A350-900s, which will eventually replace its ageing Airbus A340 fleet. It’s a major step forward in the airline’s journey of introducing highly-efficient and carbon-efficient jets to its fleet and phasing out the fuel-guzzling A340s. The five aircraft concerned are part of a total order for 25 A350-900s which was placed by the Lufthansa Group in 2019.
We are very pleased to have achieved our turnaround after the coronavirus crisis and be back on a sound financial track. As a result of this, we are now in a position to invest again in the future of our company, in our people and in the quality that we offer our travelling guests. With this planned substantial modernization of our long-haul aircraft fleet, we are setting a vital course to sustainably maintain our competitive edge over the longer term.
said Dieter Vranckx, Chief Executive Officer, SWISS.
The two-engined Airbus A350-900 is one of the most advanced and economical long-haul aircraft in airline service today. It produces some 25 per cent fewer carbon dioxide emissions than its predecessor, and is more than twice as quiet, too. The A350-900 also consumes as little as 2.5 litres of kerosene per 100 passenger-kilometres.
Our decision to acquire the Airbus A350-900 is a clear commitment to further enhancing the sustainability of our flight operations. Our new long-haul twinjet will play a substantial part in achieving our ambitious climate goals. And in adding this latest-generation aircraft to our fleet, with all the additional inflight comfort it will provide for our guests, we are also further confirming our position as a premium air carrier.
added Vranckx.

To announce the introduction of A350s to its fleet, SWISS has shared a very cool video:
There are some very good minor details in the video that are very cool. For example, the alarm goes off at 3:40 hours, indicating the replacement of A340s.
Aside from that, the Zurich-based airline says that the aircraft “will be equipped with an innovative and state-of-the-art cabin interior in all seating classes”. Does this indicate that the airline will introduce new hard products on its A350s? SWISS recently revealed that it would be introducing new hard products in 2025, so this makes even more sense now.
We can expect harmonisation in the Lufthansa Group, meaning we can expect SWISS to install the same new hard products as the ones revealed by Lufthansa on its A350s.
Eventually, SWISS’ fleet will comprise of Airbus A350s, A330s and Boeing B777s, a great mix of aircraft in my opinion. Things are getting exciting at SWISS!
Meanwhile. SWISS recently became the first airline in the world to use AeroSHARK technology.
