The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) announced that it would be issuing directives regarding the opening of Sri Lanka’s airspace for charter operations and commercial flights.

Charter flights will begin carrying predominantly Eastern European tourists first and, if all goes well, normal flights could resume gradually. The Asian country also plans to open up to foreign tourists soon with all safety measures.

The country was closed in mid-March to tourists when the 1st COVID-19 patient was detected; however national carrier SriLankan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines have been operating repatriation, cargo and departure flights.
