United will be the only airline to operate this route. Prior to the pandemic, Emirates used to operate a nonstop flight between Dubai and Newark. However, the airline has not yet resumed flights on this route. Emirates does operate a one-stop flight between Dubai and Newark via Athens. The airline also operates twice-daily flights between Dubai and New York – JFK.
Until 2016, United used to operate a flight between Washington Dulles and Dubai. The carrier suspended the route due to the tensions growing between the big three U.S. carriers (United, Delta and American) and the three Middle Eastern carriers (Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways). The three U.S. carriers accused the latter that they are heavily backed and subsidised by their respective governments. However, since then, relations between them have improved many fold and here we are, with United joining hands with Emirates for a codeshare partnership.
Due to the closure of the Russian airspace, United had to scale back its network in India with the suspension of flights between Delhi and San Francisco & Mumbai and Newark. With the help of this new flight to Dubai, United will be able to better serve India with connections on Emirates via Dubai, thus growing its own traffic to India. Prior to the Russian airspace closure, United was the largest U.S. carrier to operate flights to India.
