Scandinavian Airlines returns to India after 17 years with flights to Mumbai

Scandinavian Airlines has announced the addition of Mumbai, India to its network, marking its return to India after 17 years.

Scandinavian Airlines to Mumbai

Starting 2nd June 2026, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will operate 5-flights-a-week between Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) with the following schedule:

  • Mumbai-Copenhagen

These flights will be operated by SAS’ Airbus A330-300 aircraft featuring 32 SAS Business lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, 56 SAS Plus seats (Premium Economy) in a 2-3-2 configuration and 178 SAS Go seats (standard Economy seats) in a 2-4-2 configuration.

This service marks the return of SAS to India after 17 years.

India is a key global market โ€” both in terms of growing demand and economic importance. With this new route, SAS contributes to strengthening Copenhagenโ€™s role as a global hub while supporting increased connectivity between India and Northern Europe, as well as between India and North America. Mumbai is a natural next step in our strategy to link Scandinavia with one of the worldโ€™s most important regions for business and leisure travel.

Timed for connections

SAS says that the flights are timed for quick connections to/from destinations in Scandinavia, Europe, and North America. Courtesy of @airlinenetworkindia, the connections to North America possible from Copenhagen with an arrival time of 1145 hours are:

  • New York (JFK) – 14:20 departure (2 hours and 35 minutes connection time)
  • Seattle: 13:05 departure (1 hour and 20 minutes connection time)
  • Los Angeles: 14:15 departure (2 hours and 30 minutes connection time)
  • Boston: 13:25 departure (1 hour and 40 minutes connection time)
  • Atlanta: 13:25 departure (1 hour and 40 minutes connection time)
  • Chicago: 13:55 departure (2 hours and 10 minutes connection time)
  • San Francisco: 14:10 departure (2 hours and 25 minutes connection time)

From North America also, the connecting times in Copenhagen are similar.

Codeshare with IndiGo?

While SAS has been the first one to start reservations for its Copenhagen-Mumbai flights, Indian low cost carrier IndiGo has already announced its intention to serve Copenhagen from India with the leased Boeing 787-9s. While the details are not yet public, we can expect IndiGo to choose the Mumbai-Copenhagen route over the Delhi-Copenhagen route since the Pakistan airspace closure continues to hurt its operations. IndiGo has already announced Mumbai-Manchester and Mumbai-Amsterdam routes.

With Mumbai being a prime choice, will SAS look to establish a codeshare partnership with IndiGo? This remains to be seen but the benefits certainly are for both the parties since SAS can penetrate deeper into the Indian market and offer 2-stop itineraries from Tier-2 and Tier-3 Indian cities via Mumbai and Copenhagen to North America and vice-versa and IndiGo can feed the traffic onwards to North America with the help of its own flights to Copenhagen.

Finnair’s suspension of Mumbai flights meant that the city lost its only direct connection to Scandinavia. However, SAS is filling that gap with the launch of Copenhagen-Mumbai flights and hopefully, this route will perform well.
