All four of these routes are to key vacation destinations that have boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Americans have flocked to Florida amid ongoing travel restrictions that have shut off parts of the world for travel. One-way fares on these routes start at $59.
First East Coast Base
New Haven is the airline’s first East coast base. Until now, the airline has operated flights on the West Coast only. New Haven has minimal air service at the moment. Only American Airlines flies into the airport. Those flights run under the carrier’s American Eagle regional banner.
Andrew Levy, Chief Executive Officer, Avelo Airlines, said:
We’re excited to bring more choice, everyday low fares and the Avelo Soul of Service to Connecticut. Connecticut residents told us they want more convenient and affordable options for flying to Florida and we listened. These four popular sun-soaked destinations are an ideal winter retreat. The refreshingly simple and smooth HVN small-airport experience will ensure our Customers depart relaxed and ready for some fun in the sun.
As part of Avelo’s arrival at the airport, it will commit to invest $1.2 million to upgrade and modernize facilities at the airport. Furthermore, this is part of the $100 million project for a new terminal and extended runway planned for the airport.
Sean Scanlon, Executive Director of Tweed-New Haven Airport, said:
Today’s announcement from Avelo Airlines is another clear step towards transforming Tweed-New Haven into a more vibrant and sustainable airport, one that can help grow jobs and serve as an economic driver for our region. For years the people of southern Connecticut have been asking for more options when it comes to flights, and – starting this November – that will be a reality. While today is very exciting, it is truly just the beginning, and we look forward to a continued and growing partnership with Avelo here at HVN.
New Haven is located in Southern Connecticut. The city’s airport is often overshadowed by many area airports. This includes New York’s LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy Airports, Westchester County Airport, and Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut.
The airport is a convenient gateway for most of Southern Connecticut. New Haven also can attract a larger array of customers. New York City-area airports are not well-known for major low-cost services. Hartford has received much attention and service from low-cost point-to-point carriers like Breeze Airways and Spirit Airlines.
Additionally, Tweed-New Haven Airport has lot of growth opportunities in the future. After it launches, Avelo will become the largest airline at the airport. With the terminal and infrastructure improvements planned, the airline could be set for even more growth that will be a boon for Southern Connecticut’s population and the state as a whole – including Yale’s students looking to get away from the cold when it comes time to take a break from school.
Bysiewicz, Governer, Connecticut Lt., said:
Today’s announcement from Avelo Airlines is great news for Connecticut. Tweed-New Haven airport is an accessible, convenient travel option for families across our state, and the introduction of more flights and more destinations will truly help turn it into a gateway to southern Connecticut and New England. Today’s announcement will also bring good-paying jobs to the New Haven region and will drive economic growth in our state. I look forward to welcoming Avelo to Connecticut’s skies this November.
Justin Elicker, Mayor of New Haven, said:
More options for our residents and more economic activity for our region. This is very exciting. Today’s announcement builds a strong leisure and economic relationship with leading destinations in Florida. In doing so, Avelo will create good paying local jobs and build economic development momentum as we implement a long-term sustainable plan for our region.
Jorge Roberts, CEO of Avports, said:
As the local operator of Tweed-New-Haven for more than 20 years, we are extremely excited that Avelo Airlines will soon be starting these new nonstop flights from Connecticut. Both Avports and Avelo have made clear that we believe in the long-term future of HVN and its ability to serve more flyers from the surrounding region. In the coming months, we look forward to hiring for new jobs at the airport to support this increased activity.
Spirit Airlines recently announced four new routes to Florida from New England.
Meanwhile, Avelo Airlines recently added four new routes from Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport and nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Santa Rosa.
