SpiceJet to start flights between Ahmedabad and Dubai

SpiceJet has announced nonstop flights between Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India and Dubai, UAE starting tomorrow (11th September 2021), thus entering a highly competitive market. The decision comes after the UAE has eased entry requirements for international travellers.

These flights will be operated by the airline’s Boeing B737s.

Competition

The Delhi-based airline is entering a highly competitive market. Presently, 4 airlines namely Emirates, flydubai, Air India and Indigo operates flights between Ahmedabad and Dubai.

Emirates operates 4-weekly Boeing B777 service (increasing to daily from 1st October 2021) while flydubai operates 9-weekly Boeing B737 flights. Indigo, India’s largest airline, operates 2-weekly Airbus A320 services (increasing to daily from 1st November 2021) while Indian national carrier Air India operates once-weekly Boeing B787 Dreamliner service.

Clearly, this is a very competitive market and in my opinion, SpiceJet will have a tough time gaining market share on this route. However, as the Indian low-cost carrier’s fares on this route are lower than most of its competitors, it should not be that tough to fill the seats.

Meanwhile, SpiceJet recently announced 42 new domestic and international flights including flights to Maldives as the country is now welcoming travellers from India. The airline has also announced flights from Hyderabad to Kochi; from Hyderabad to Visakhapatnam and Guwahati and between Belagavi and Delhi. SpiceJet yesterday announced five new flights from Guwahati. A few days ago, the airline announced 10 new flights including flights between Bhavnagar and Surat. SpiceJet passengers can now book airport transfers inflight on Spicescreen. The airline has also started trials of the IATA Travel Pass on the Mumbai-Male-Mumbai route and has launched flights between Ahmedabad and Amritsar.
