WestJet to require all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19

Canadian full service carrier WestJet has announced that it will require all of its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Effective 30th October 2021, all WestJet Group employees will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. In addition, full vaccination status will be a requirement of employment for all future employees hired by the WestJet Group. WestJet is the third Canadian airline to mandate COVID-19 after Air Canada and Porter Airlines.

Mark Porter, Executive Vice-President of People, WestJet, said:

Protecting the health and safety of our guests and employees remains our number one priority and vaccinations are our best line of defense. Aviation has been one of the hardest hit industries and we believe requiring all WestJet Group employees to be vaccinated is the right thing to do and ensures the safest travel and work environment for everyone in WestJet’s world.

The WestJet Group will evaluate and accommodate those employees who are unable to be vaccinated against COVID-19 either through medical or other exemption. Employees who fail to attest their vaccination status by September 24 or achieve full vaccination status by October 30, 2021, will face unpaid leave or termination of employment. Unlike Porter Airlines, as part of its vaccine mandate, WestJet will not provide testing as an alternative to vaccination.

Porter continued:

The WestJet Group remains committed to building back even stronger to ensure a competitive aviation industry in Canada. Requiring all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 is essential to the safe restart of travel across Canada.

Airlines across the world are mandating vaccination against COVID-19 for its employees. Airlines like Qantas are also rewarding its passengers who are fully vaccinated.

WestJet has been expanding aggressively in the past few days. Just a few days ago, WestJet announced flights to Seattle in the United States and the resumption of flights to California later this year. The airline has also launched flights to Amsterdam and resumed flights to Paris. WestJet will launch a dedicated cargo arm in 2022 and has restarted many routes across Canada too. The airline will launch flights to Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland from Toronto and Halifax in Spring 2022. WestJet on 8th September 2021 launched flights between Calgary in Alberta and Dawson Creek in British Columbia.
