Khajuraho, previously known as Kharjuravahaka, is an ancient city in Madhya Pradesh. It was built during medieval times by the Chandela Dynasty. The grandiose of the statues and temples makes Khajuraho one of the most popular tourist places in Madhya Pradesh. One of the most popular tourist destinations in India, Khajuraho has the country’s largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic sculptures. Beautiful, detailed, and expressive, the Khajuraho temples are divided into three groups: Eastern, Western and Southern.

The Western group is very close to the archaeological museum, and it includes the temples of Lakshmana, Matangeshwara, Varaha, Kandariya Mahadev, Chitragupta, Parvati, Vishwanatha and Nandi. Eastern group includes Vamana, Javari and Parsvanatha Temple. Southern Group includes Duladeo and Chaturbhuja Temple. Some other prominent tourist attractions include Panna National Park, Raneh waterfall, Kalinjar fort, Dhubela museum, archaeological museum of Khajuraho, and more.

Strategic decision

Khajuraho is one of the few destinations in the IndiGo network which will have a single daily flight. The addition of flights between Varanasi and Khajuraho is a strategic addition as both are religious destinations and tourists generally combine these two cities in their itinerary. Additionally, the winter season is the peak season for foreign tourists, enabling IndiGo to capitalise on the high demand.

In the past, Vistara and Jet Airways also used to fly the same routing of Delhi-Varanasi-Khajuraho. Currently, SpiceJet is the only airline serving Khajuraho with a daily nonstop service from Delhi.

IndiGo’s Khajuraho debut is yet another instance where it is entering a market more or less built by SpiceJet. However, IndiGo will directly not compete with SpiceJet, given that the former has a through flight between Delhi and Khajuraho and the latter has a nonstop on offer. If I were to take a guess, IndiGo would add some other destination(s) from Khajuraho, probably to Kolkata or Mumbai.

Leaving that aside for now, it’s great to see IndiGo ticking yet another Indian destination off the list of where it does not fly to.

Meanwhile, IndiGo recently announced the addition of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan to its network.
