Ethiopian Airlines has announced an order for more Boeing aircraft. The order represents the largest-ever purchase of Boeing airplanes in African history.
The Addis Ababa-based carrier has placed an order for the following aircraft:
- 11 Airbus A350-900s
- 11 Boeing B787-9 Dreamliners
- 20 Boeing B737MAX-8s
- Options for 36 more aircraft – 15 B787-9s and 21 B737MAX-8s
Ethiopian currently operates more than 80 Boeing aircraft, along with Airbus aircraft. The new commitment positions Ethiopian Airlines to further strengthen and diversify its fleet. Ethiopian currently operates Africa’slargest B787 Dreamliner fleet with a mix of B787-8s and B787-9s. The new B737MAX order will grow the airline’s backlog for the aircraft to 50.
The carrier currently operates a fleet of 20 A350-900s and with this commitment, it will confirm its position as Africa’s biggest A350 customer.

Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines have also agreed to work together to provide cabin modification services for the carrier’s existing B787 Dreamliners. The comprehensive retrofits will enhance the passenger experience with advanced in-flight entertainment and new seats in all cabins, including lie-flat business-class seats from Boeing joint venture Adient Aerospace.
