Japan Airlines places order for 42 Airbus and Boeing aircraft

Japan Airlines has announced an order for 42 Airbus and Boeing aircraft. This mainly includes expanding the fleet for international routes to North America and Asia.

New order

Japan Airlines has placed an order for the following aircraft:

  • 21 Airbus A350-900s
  • 11 Airbus A321neos
  • 10 Boeing B787-9s

This is the first time that the airline has placed an order for Airbus’ narrow body aircraft. The carrier currently operates its fleet of A350-900s on domestic routes but once these new A350-900s come in, 20 of them will be used for international operations. Along with the A350-900s, the Boeing B787-9s will be used to expand international in North American, Asian and Indian markets. The introduction of both aircraft types is planned over a period of approximately six years, starting in 2027.

The A321neos will replace the Boeing B767s. These aircraft will be strategically deployed on routes that align with demand, including to and from Tokyo Haneda Airport, starting from 2028. Furthermore, JAL has also decided to introduce one additional Airbus A350-900 (domestic configured) as a replacement for the A350-900 aircraft that was lost in January 2024.

JAL will replace its Boeing B737-800 fleet with 21 Boeing B737MAX-8s, starting from 2026. JAL Group aims to achieve a 10% reduction in total emissions compared to 2019 by fiscal year 2030, and near-zero emissions by fiscal year 2050.
