India extends suspension of UK flights

India has extended UK Travel ban till 7th January,2021.

Flights between India and the United Kingdom will now remain suspended till 7th January,2021. The government of India has decided to extend the 23-31 December suspension by a week more in an attempt to stop the spread of a new and fast-spreading COVID-19 variant.

This decision comes after 20 positive cases of the new COVID-19 variant has been found in India.

“Decision has been taken to extend the temporary suspension of flights to and from the UK till January 7, 2021. Thereafter strictly regulated resumption will take place for which details will be announced shortly.”, said Hardeep Singh Puri, Aviation Minister, India.

“We went back to November 25 and did contact tracing and genie sequencing of passengers who had directly or indirectly come from UK since that date. So far, six people who came from the UK have so far been reported to have been detected with the new Covid strain,” Puri had said on Tuesday.

There are 67 weekly flights between India and the UK operated by 4 airlines- British Airways, Vistara, Virgin Atlantic and Air India. Almost 2,000-2,500 passengers used to fly in daily on these flights.
